This weekend is a time of remembering those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to 
ensure our freedom and safety. It is a time of offering sincere gratitude to all of them, those who currently are serving in our military, their families and those that have passed on.

Local activities abound on Memorial Day
From parades to ceremonies, there are plenty of activities to partake in around the Merrimack Valley this Memorial Day.
Temperatures will be warm throughout the region this weekend, peaking in the low 90s on Saturday before dropping off into the 70s through Monday, according to the National Weather Service. There is a chance for showers Monday.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is encouraging travelers to plan ahead for their long weekend travel, with the heaviest traffic expected Friday and Monday afternoons.
The following is a roundup of Memorial Day weekend events in the Merrimack Valley.
Andover
The town’s annual Memorial Day parade and ceremonies will be held Monday, May 30.
Ceremonies will be held as follows: West Parish Cemetery at 7 a.m.; St. Augustine’s Cemetery at 7:30 a.m.; and Spring Grove Cemetery at 8 a.m.
The Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed to The Park, where ceremonies will be held at 10:45 a.m.
In the event of heavy rain, all observances will be held inside the Memorial Auditorium.
Haverhill
There will be several Memorial Day events in the city on Monday.
To start the day, the Haverhill Police Relief Association will hold its annual Memorial Day service from 9 to 9:15 a.m. Monday in front of the police station, 40 Bailey Blvd.
Haverhill’s Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in front of Lorraine Post 29 VFW, 64 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill.
The parade will travel down Main Street and turn onto Summer Street to the Linwood Cemetery for services.
Cmdr. John Lenotte of the American Legion Wilbur M. Comeau Post 4 in Haverhill will serve as emcee. Speakers will include Mayor James Fiorentini and possibly Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.
Local students will read the Gettysburg Address and General John A. Logan’s Memorial Day Order. After the ceremony there will be a collation at the VFW post for parade participants.
That afternoon, a memorial service for veterans will be held at 3 p.m. at Hilldale Cemetery. The event is open to the public.
After the service, anyone who has a relative buried at Hilldale will receive assistance by members of the cemetery’s board of director in locating their family plot.

Lawrence
The City of Lawrence will hold a Memorial Day celebration at 9 a.m. Monday at Bellevue Cemetery, 100 Reservoir St., Lawrence.
Sergeant First Class Daniel X. Santiago will be the keynote speaker for the event, which will be held rain or shine at the cemetery.

Methuen
The city’s annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday outside the American Legion Post 122, 200 Broadway, Methuen.
All active duty service members, reservists, National Guard members and veterans are invited to march in the parade, along with public and private school groups, scout troops and civic organizations.
The parade will form at 9:30 a.m. and step off around 10 a.m. It will go north along Broadway to the Charles Street monuments for a ceremony, and will then proceed down Charles Street across Broadway to Hampshire Street. It will then go left on Lowell Street, past the Central Fire Station and left on Grove Street to the Walnut Grove Cemetery for a ceremony.
Following that, the parade will return to Grove Street, right on Lowell Street, and back past the Central Fire Station, right on Hampshire Street and right on Broadway, returning to the Legion post at the end.
There will be a carpool at 11:45 a.m. to the Veterans Lot at Elmwood Cemetery, where there will be a ceremony at noon by Arnold Greenwood Post 8349, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

North Andover
The town’s Memorial Day events will include a parade and a ceremony honoring members of the Gile family.
The parade will form at 10 a.m. Monday on the west side of the Center Common, Osgood and Andover Streets. It will turn right onto Massachusetts Avenue, left onto Salem Street, and will end at Ridgewood Cemetery for the ceremony.
Frank S. Gile, a North Andover Civil War veteran buried in Ridgewood Cemetery, will be recognized during the ceremony. Gile helped rescue his stranded ship, the USS Lehigh, in Charleston Harbor while it was being shelled by Confederates in November 1863, and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his “courage and bravery,” according to the town.
Two of his descendants, Joseph T. Gile Sr., who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and Joseph T. Gile Jr., a U.S. Marine killed in action in Vietnam in 1966, will also be honored.
Chief Warrant Officer 4 Gerry Izzo, who served as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot in Somalia in 1993, will be the guest speaker.
After the ceremony, the parade will reform and proceed back to Center Common. A small contingency will reform at the VFW Post 2104 on Park Street for a ceremonial flag raising and reception.
In the event of inclement weather, services will be held at 10:30 a.m. the middle school Veterans Auditorium.
